Maundy Thursday
April 9 is Maundy Thursday. It is the day when Jesus ate his final meal of bread and wine with his disciples. We sometimes call this meal “the Last Supper.”
During the Last Supper, Jesus told the disciples that the bread and wine they were sharing were symbols of his love for them. Jesus also told the disciples to think about him every time they shared this meal in the future. |
As you read or listen to today’s story, see if any of the things Jesus says sound familiar. Where have you heard these words before?

Bake Communion bread.
Jesus and his disciples ate unleavened bread at their Passover meal. Many churches today use a similar type of bread during Communion. Click here for the unleavened bread recipe we use at CtK during the 8:15 and 11:15 services. Try making your own bread at home! Eat your creation while reviewing today's Bible story, or save some for Communion at home in the days ahead. Set a special table.
Use a piece of paper to create a one-of-a-kind placemat. Decorate the placemat with drawings of bread and wine, Jesus and the disciples eating, or any religious symbols you choose. Set the table with your placemat on Maundy Thursday, and say a special prayer before the meal to thank God for the gift of Holy Communion. Build the Last Supper.
Use play clay, Lego, or another type of blocks to build a model of the Last Supper. Be sure to include a table, bread, wine, Jesus, and 12 disciples (or as many disciples as you can fit at your table). Try creating other scenes from Holy Week, too--like Jesus riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Share what you've made! Take a picture of your project and send it to [email protected] so we can include it in our online gallery!
