The Story of Lazarus
March 29 is the fifth Sunday of Lent. It is also the last Sunday before Holy Week. This week’s lesson focuses on Jesus’ final miracle before he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday: the raising of Lazarus from the dead.
Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha, were close friends of Jesus. They lived a few miles outside Jerusalem in a town called Bethany. Some of you may remember learning about Mary and Martha a few weeks ago in Sunday School. |
This week’s story features many different feelings experienced by many different people. As you read or listen to the story, try to identify some of these feelings, who has them, and why.

The story of Lazarus comes from John 11: 1–44. Find the story in the family Bible or a children’s storybook Bible and read it together.

Connect more deeply with the story of Lazarus by trying one or more of these activities:

Make some faces.
Cut out 4 or 5 paper circles. Use them to make “emojis” similar to the ones shown in the video. Each emoji should represent one of the feelings from the story (for example: scared, sad, confused, and happy). Read or watch the story again, and hold up each emoji whenever the people in the story are experiencing that feeling. Reenact the story as a family.
Make a “cave” out of blankets, and wrap “Lazarus” up with strips of cloth or toilet paper. After Lazarus comes out of the tomb, have a family dance party to celebrate! Be like Jesus—and help someone feel better.
Lots of people are feeling sad, lonely, or a bit scared right now. Think of someone you know who might need some cheering up. Draw them a picture or write them a note, then leave it on their front porch or drop it in the mail. Share what you've made! Take a picture of your project and send it to [email protected] so we can include it in our online gallery!
